As part of the EU-funded Just Fashion pilot projects, the partner Staff Jersey—coordinated by ART-ER and Materahub—is moving from high-level sustainability goals to practical software implementation. Developed alongside technical partner Centro Qualità Tessile (CQT), the new Digital Product Passport (DPP) tool is currently undergoing testing on its first pilot item: a technical unisex long-sleeve shirt from Staff Jersey’s B2C sportswear division, Skinsonik.
To make complex environmental and supply chain data readable, CQT and ART-ER mapped a structured KPI matrix divided into two macro-levels: product properties and company properties.
- Product Properties: focus on technical specification and footprint. These include material composition (e.g., precise percentages of polypropylene, polyamide, and elastane), local district origin, production scrap rates, packaging recyclability, as well as direct resource metrics such as energy footprint (kWh), water consumption (liters), and Carbon Footprint (kgCO2eq) per unit.
- Company Properties: capture overall corporate governance and certifications, such as GRS or GOTS compliance, percentage of renewable energy used, chemical management protocols, and social responsibility standards.
Technically, the software organizes information across a hierarchy: product families, items, and batches. Each property is assigned a unique code, language tag, data type (qualitative choice or quantitative value), and unit of measure. Once entered, the system aggregates these parameters to generate a unique batch code and QR code. Scanning it reveals the garment’s full lifecycle story, proving that technical rigour is the true foundation of transparent, circular fashion.
